You Don’t Control Anything. You’re Made of Everything. And You Never Really Die.

There’s a particular kind of silence that arrives right before dawn — the kind where the sky hasn’t decided yet what color it wants to be, and neither have you. I’ve been sitting in that silence a lot lately, turning over a question that used to scare me and now just humbles me: what if none of this was ever mine to control?

Not the outcome. Not the timeline. Not even, really, the atoms currently arranged into the shape you call yourself.

I used to think that was a frightening thought. Now I think it might be the most liberating one available to us — and, strangely, physics agrees.

The Illusion of the Steering Wheel

We move through our days as if we’re driving something. Grip the wheel, plan the route, brace for the turns. But sit with a system long enough — a weather pattern, a stock market, a single human heart — and you find the same quiet truth waiting underneath: small, invisible shifts cascade into outcomes no one could have steered.

This isn’t just a feeling. It’s a documented behavior of the universe. Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist trying to model the atmosphere in the 1960s, discovered that rounding a number in the sixth decimal place — a difference smaller than a whisper — produced a completely different weather forecast. He called it sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Everyone else calls it the butterfly effect. The lesson wasn’t that weather is chaotic and unknowable in some mystical sense. It was that in complex, interconnected systems, control was never really on the table to begin with. You can influence. You cannot command.

Werner Heisenberg found something even stranger sitting underneath the floorboards of reality itself. At the quantum level, you cannot simultaneously know a particle’s exact position and its exact momentum — not because our instruments are clumsy, but because the universe itself doesn’t hold both answers at once. Uncertainty isn’t a gap in our knowledge. It’s woven into the fabric of what’s knowable. Even the universe, at its smallest scale, refuses to be fully pinned down.

So maybe the anxiety of not controlling your life isn’t a personal failing. Maybe it’s just what it feels like to be a conscious thing embedded in a universe that was never built to be gripped.

Nothing Out Here Is Actually Separate

Here’s where it gets, I think, genuinely beautiful.

In 1935, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen described something that troubled Einstein so deeply he called it “spooky action at a distance.” Two particles, once entangled, remain connected in such a way that measuring one instantly correlates with the state of the other — regardless of the distance between them. Not a fast signal. Not a delayed signal. A relationship that doesn’t respect the space in between. Decades of experiments have since confirmed it. Quantum entanglement is real, verified, and Nobel-winning physics, not metaphor.

I’m not going to tell you that means your intuition about a loved one is quantum telepathy — that’s not what the physics says, and I don’t want to borrow its authority dishonestly. But I will say this: entanglement forces us to admit that separateness was always a convenient illusion, a story told at human scale for human purposes. At the level physics actually operates, particles that seem alone are often, quietly, in relationship.

Zoom out further and quantum field theory tells us something even more disorienting: there is no “you” and “not-you” in the way we imagine it. What we call particles are ripples in underlying fields that stretch across the entire universe — the same electron field, the same photon field, everywhere, always. You are not a separate object placed into the universe. You are a local thickening of fields that are, at bottom, continuous with everything else. The skin you think is your border is really more like a shoreline — a place where the ocean happens to look different, not a place where the ocean ends.

Where the Energy Goes

Now, the part that changed how I think about grief, and endings, and my own mortality.

The first law of thermodynamics is not poetry. It’s one of the most rigorously tested principles in all of physics: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form into another. Every joule of energy in existence today was here, in some form, at the birth of the universe. It has just been endlessly translated — into light, into heat, into motion, into the particular electrochemical flicker that is a thought passing through a mind.

And here’s the part I find almost unbearably tender: every heavier element in your body — the calcium in your bones, the iron in your blood, the oxygen you just breathed in — was forged in the heart of a dying star. Carbon doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from stellar nucleosynthesis, from stars living out their entire lives and then, in supernova, scattering their insides across the galaxy so that billions of years later, something like you could stand in a doorway watching the sky change color.

You are not in the universe, borrowing its resources for eighty-some years before returning them. You are the universe, temporarily organized into a shape that can look back at itself and ask what it means.

When that shape eventually loosens — and it will, because entropy always wins, because the second law of thermodynamics insists that all closed systems drift toward disorder — the energy doesn’t stop existing. It doesn’t go anywhere, because there was never an “away” for it to go to. It disperses. It transforms. It becomes soil, becomes root, becomes the particular gold light on a field in October, becomes, eventually, someone else’s exhale. Nothing is subtracted from the universe. It is only ever rearranged.

That is not a metaphor I’m reaching for to make death feel gentler. That is the first law of thermodynamics, and it has never once been violated in the history of observed physics.

So What Do We Do With This

I think we’re taught, early and often, that maturity means tightening our grip — planning harder, controlling more, holding on with white knuckles to the illusion that if we just try hard enough, we can keep the shape of things from changing.

But the butterfly effect says influence, not command. The uncertainty principle says some things were never yours to pin down. Entanglement says the walls between “me” and “everything else” were thinner than we let ourselves believe. And the conservation of energy says that nothing you have ever loved, and no version of yourself you have ever been, actually disappears. It just stops being arranged the way it was.

Maybe the invitation isn’t to control your life more tightly. Maybe it’s to participate in it more fully — the way a wave participates in the ocean, fully itself and fully connected, right up until the moment it isn’t a wave anymore and becomes, simply, water again.

You were never separate. You were never in charge. And you were never, not for one single moment, going to disappear.

You were only ever going to change form.
