Was the Washing Machine One of the First Robots in Our House?

Think about what a washing machine actually does.

You put clothes in. You press a button. And then it takes over — filling itself with water, measuring the cycle, agitating, rinsing, spinning, stopping. All without you. All on its own. Following a sequence it was programmed to follow, completing a task that used to take an entire morning of human effort.

If someone described that to you without using the word “washing machine,” you might call it a robot.

And you would not be wrong.


Before the Machine, There Was the Labor

For most of human history, washing clothes was one of the most physically demanding tasks in a household. It meant hauling water. Scrubbing by hand against a washboard. Wringing fabric until your arms gave out. Hanging everything to dry and starting over.

It was almost exclusively done by women. It was exhausting. And it happened every week, without exception, for as long as people wore clothes.

The first mechanical washing machines appeared in the 1800s — hand-cranked drums that at least removed some of the scrubbing. By the early 1900s, electric motors arrived and changed everything. By the middle of the century, the automatic washing machine — the one that runs its own full cycle — was becoming a fixture in homes across the world.

And quietly, without anyone calling it a robot, a robot moved into the house.


What Makes Something a Robot?

This is the question worth sitting with.

We tend to imagine robots as humanoid machines, or at least mechanical things that move through space — arms welding car parts in a factory, or a device rolling across the surface of Mars. The word carries a certain science-fiction weight.

But the technical definition is simpler: a robot is a machine that performs tasks automatically, following a programmed sequence, reducing or replacing the need for human action.

By that definition, the washing machine qualifies. So does the dishwasher. So does the thermostat that decides when your house is too cold. So does the elevator that takes you to your floor.

We have been living with robots for a long time. We just didn’t call them that.


Amore in Parallel — The Robots Running Alongside Us

This is what I find most fascinating: the washing machine doesn’t interrupt your life. It runs alongside it.

You start a cycle and then you go make breakfast, help with homework, answer emails, take a walk. The machine is doing its work in a parallel lane — present, steady, quiet — while you do yours. You don’t coordinate with it. You don’t check in. You simply trust that when you come back, the job will be done.

That is amore in parallel in one of its most humble forms. Two things moving forward at the same time, neither one diminishing the other. The machine gives you back the hours. You decide what to do with them.

And that parallel has only deepened over time. Today we have devices that learn from us, assistants that remember our preferences, tools that run in the background of our lives handling tasks we used to do manually. The washing machine was the beginning of a very long conversation between human life and the technology that runs alongside it — a conversation we are still very much in the middle of.


The Robots We Stopped Noticing

There’s something fascinating about the way technology disappears once it becomes familiar.

The washing machine was revolutionary. It gave people — primarily women — hours of their lives back every week. It changed what was possible in a day. And then, within a generation, it became invisible. Just an appliance. Just a thing in the corner of the laundry room that you fill and forget about.

This is what happens to every robot that works well enough, long enough: we stop seeing it as remarkable. It becomes infrastructure. It becomes normal. And the next generation grows up never knowing the world it replaced.

Right now, we are in the middle of that same process with a new wave of technology. AI assistants, language models, tools that read and write and reason. They feel remarkable today — and they are. But they are also on their way to becoming invisible in the same way the washing machine did. Present enough that eventually, we stop noticing.


What We Want to Teach Children at Roma8Lab

Here is where this question becomes personal for me.

That curiosity is not a gift some children have and others don’t. It is a practice. It is something that can be cultivated, encouraged, made into a habit. The washing machine is not just an appliance. It is an invitation.

How does it work? Who built it? What problem did it solve? What did it cost — not in money, but in the human hours it replaced? And what did people do with those hours once they got them back?

Those are not simple questions. And they are not only for engineers or historians. They are for anyone who wants to understand the world they live in.


A Question Worth Asking

If the washing machine taught us anything, it is that the most transformative technologies are often the quietest ones.

Not the ones on magazine covers. Not the ones with dramatic launch events. The ones that slip into daily life and stay there — making things easier, freeing up time, running in parallel, handling the tasks that used to cost us hours we didn’t have.

The washing machine gave families time. What will the next generation of quiet, invisible tools give us?

And more importantly: what will we do with the hours?
